A Brief History Of Motorbikes

Before taking on the shape and power of today’s motorbike, the first gas-powered 2-wheel bike goes back to around 1885 and looked more like a bicycle than a motorbike. However, this early type of motorbike was a prelude to the future of petrol-powered vehicles.
As the motorised bike became more popular, enthusiasm lead to greater advancements and even competitive racing which also inspired further development and innovation. In only three short decades the motorbike went from a modest motorised vehicle to a serious high speed machine. New designs meant faster, stronger engines meant to last.
The history of motorbikes includes their role in World War II where they were deployed as quick, lightweight, and easy-to-transport vehicles for military personnel. Movies like The Great Escape with Steve McQueen magnificently portrayed the “freedom” motorbikes symbolised during the war. Today, the motorbike still represents a sense of freedom and independence as well as speed and high-tech engineering.
There are concerns when it comes to safety as you are much more vulnerable to injury due to exposure of outside elements, unlike a car. However, overall motorbikes not only offer a sense of freedom but are very economical as they use less petrol and emit fewer emissions than cars. A motorbike is ideal for city travel and can easily get around traffic congestion once again emitting less pollution.
There are as many styles and types of bikes as there are personalities who love them. From small bikes for city travel to large “hogs” for leisurely cruises to even high powered speed demons for racing, the history of motorbikes is truly a history of motorised vehicles that affect our lives every day.
